The Five Key Areas You Must Consider
Ensure you get the right maternity insurance cover for your circumstances

Waiting Period

You cannot be pregnant and request maternity cover for your unborn child. You must go through a Waiting Period. This will typically be 10 or 12 months after applying for your maternity insurance.

Maternity Budget

Each insurer will determine its own Maternity Budget. This amount will be used towards your maternity costs. You need to know what it covers, because all insurers have different criteria.

Baby Delivery

Each insurer will have different rules for how your baby is born. Normal delivery will be covered by all plans, but not all insurers will allow elective c-section delivery.

New-born Care

The next criteria to consider is how much of your baby’s own costs are met by the insurer? For example, will your baby’s hospital care and treatment, including their paediatrician, be covered?

Coverage After the Birth.

The final consideration in your selection for a maternity insurance is the ongoing, post-natal medical coverage for your new-born child. Some insurers will automatically insure your new-born baby from birth, irrespective of your baby’s health. Other insurers will only consider insuring your new-born baby after completing a medical questionnaire. They may place exclusions on some active health conditions.

Customer Testimonials
Here’s what a few of our customers think.
The hardest thing about getting insurance away from home is figuring out all the different options. There’s so much to take in! Thanks to Marc at Expat Insurance, for explaining it all in a way that we could easily understand.
Tamhas, lives in Hong Kong with his family
Excellent, excellent, excellent. 5 stars to Expat Insurance Hong Kong. My husband and I bought medical insurance top-up plans to work in tandem with our employer scheme. We took out a similar plan with two different insurers and made significant savings on options we had looked at online. Plus, we also got dental coverage! Their practice of face-to-face meetings helped immensely, and it is much nicer to meet with friendly, professional, experienced staff than to do it all online at a greater cost!

My wife and I took out comprehensive medical insurance with Expat, including maternity cover. We were treated very professionally and everything about their service is excellent. Our broker met us as well when my wife became pregnant to run through a variety of options. Thoroughly recommend their services, and we are now preparing for our son’s birth. All good.

Frequently asked questions from our customers

What is the waiting period for Maternity Insurance?
You cannot be pregnant and request maternity cover for your unborn child. You must go through a Waiting Period. This will typically be 10 or 12 months after applying for your maternity insurance. Once the waiting period has expired, you will then be able to use the maternity budget for your pregnancy.
What will my maternity budget be?
Each insurer will determine its own Maternity Budget. This amount will be used towards your maternity costs. You need to know what it covers, because all insurers have different criteria. You should consider pre-natal costs, delivery costs, new born care costs, post-natal costs and complication costs for the mother. Expat Insurance can talk to you about your best options and coverage levels.
Will I be covered for C-Section?
Each insurer will have different rules for how your baby is born. Normal delivery will be covered by all plans, but not all insurers will allow elective c-section delivery. If you have to give birth by emergency c-section then most insurers will increase their maternity budget. Assisted pregnancies such as IVF Treatment may have many conditions attached to the insurance plan.
Will I be covered for the care of the baby?
You will need to consider is how much of your baby’s own costs are met by the insurer. For example, will your baby’s hospital care and treatment, including their paediatrician, be covered? Each insurer again has a different approach to New-Born Care. Expat Insurance can clarify your best-suited plan and explain its benefits in full.
Will my baby be covered after the birth procedure?
The final consideration in your selection for a maternity insurance is the ongoing, post-natal medical coverage for your new-born child. Some insurers will automatically insure your new-born baby from birth, irrespective of your baby’s health. Other insurers will only consider insuring your new-born baby after completing a medical questionnaire. They may place exclusions on some active health conditions.
